Flood Relief and Aid

 As floods and uncertainty continue to rage around us, this Advent season is shaping up to be unlike any we have known before.  

Yet there are many reasons to hold onto Hope, find Peace, seek Joy and, most of all, share Love.  

The offers of aid and messages of caring and compassion continue flow to our community and we will need to keep offering comfort and aid for many weeks, possibly months, to come.  

As today is Giving Tuesday, here are some ways you can help the many people in our community who are suffering from loss and emotional distress:  

PWRDF Flood Relief Fund

PWRDF is accepting donations to support relief and recovery efforts in lower British Columbia where floods have destroyed farms and infrastructure. Over the past two weeks, people have contributed more than $17,000 to the cause. PWRDF consulted with Bishops of New Westminster, Caledonia, Kootenay, Islands and Inlets and the Territory of the People. An initial solidarity grant of $10,000 was given on November 29 to the Diocese of New Westminster. The funds will support vulnerable displaced people and migrant workers at an evacuation centre near the Abbotsford airport.

Sorrento Centre

Sorrento Centre issued an emergency appeal nearly two weeks ago, as mudslides and flooding devastated entire communities. The centre continues to offer shelter and food to an estimated 500 evacuees from Merritt, Kamloops, and nearby communities. While some evacuees have been able to return to their homes in the last few days, others are still waiting.

Feeling down? The Christmas season may be difficult this year in light of the pandemic and flood. If you or loved ones need to talk, call Telecare Crisis & Caring Line. You can chat with a warm-hearted believer who wants to hear from you.

Their number is 604-852-9099, or toll free outside the lower mainland at 1-888-852-9099. 

They also are looking for remote volunteers. Training is provided.
