Sermon – Easter Sunday April 9, 2023.
I wonder what you are aware of in this room this morning. What do you notice? What is highlighted to you? Perhaps you notice the big stained-glass windows with light streaming in or the smell of old wood and ancient prayers. Maybe you are aware of the people sitting around you or you notice the beautiful flowers on the Cross and all around the room, or maybe you notice the funny flappy clothes that the priest is wearing :)
In all of life we notice – we become aware of things around us. We also notice what is happening within ourselves. We become aware of feeling good when we are with someone we love, and perhaps that we are anxious when things are unsettled. We notice when we are touched deeply by something meaningful. According to Cynthia Bourgeault, Episcopalian priest, wisdom teacher and author, and other wisdom leaders throughout the ages, they say we have 3 kinds of awareness that we live with.
