Sermon – September 17 , 2023 God’s Presence ‘Lit up the night’
“So the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night.”
When the people of Israel were fleeing from the Egyptian Army, God guided them to freedom with a pillar of cloud which showed them The Way to go. And at night on the threshold of war, we are told, “in the darkness – the cloud lit up the night!”
God’s presence hovers above in the night, and in the light of God’s Presence the two armies do not attack each other – they do not fight. God rested there, and so did both armies.
Throughout the Hebrew stories of the people of God, God’s presence and guidance is often known in a pillar of cloud by day and when they wandered in the wilderness the pillar is of fire in the night. The presence of God manifests to lead them and to be a comfort and source of strength knowing God is with them. [See the Sermon Notes for the entire text.]
